The Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (MGSU) was founded in 1921. Until 1993 it was known under the name of The Moscow Civil Engineering Institute (MISI).
MGSU is the leading higher educational establishment of its type in Russia, one of the largest world’s centres of building science and education.
Scientific and pedagogical schools of our University were founded by outstanding native scholars, architects and builders like Academicians V.P. Obraztsov, V.A. Vesnin (President of the USSR Academy of Architecture in 1938-1949 , collaborator of the Dneprovskaya Hydroelectric Power Station project), I.M. Rerberg (author of the Kiev Railway Station, the Central Telegraph and other projects of Moscow buildings), I.G. Alexandrov (one of the authors of the GOELRO plan) and many others.
The scientists of MGSU participated in surveys, expertise, designing, construction and reconstruction of the largest construction projects in different regions of Russia and abroad. The unique structures of the Saviour Christ’s Cathedral and Manezhnaya Ploshchad Shopping Centre have been constructed under their participation of late years, the Gostinny Dvor Complex and the National Hotel have been renovated, a new building of Sberbank and many other structures have also been erected.
At the University an important significance is added to development and introduction of the modern forms of tuition to educational process. The Student Society of Scientific Research actively functions at the University. Many students’ works have been awarded diplomas and bonuses in Russia and abroad.
In its 80-year long history University has trained more than 80000 civil engineers, including (since 1946) more than 2900 specialists for 97 foreign countries. Currently MGSU has 9 Faculties with 8000 undergraduate full-time students, 1600 part-time students and more than 500 postgraduate students, including more than 200 students from 35 foreign countries.
In compliance with the requirements of Construction Industry, MGSU has recently opened a number of new up-to-date specialisations in all faculties. The University has 61 Departments with 1300 teaching staff, including 65 Full and Corresponding Members of the Russian and International Academies of Science, 130 Doctors and 700 Candidates of Science , 140 Professors and 600 Associate Professors. MGSU has the State Accreditation to provide professional, surveying, design and engineering works for construction programs. The University fundamental scientific library accounts more than 1 600 000 volumes both in Russian and foreign languages, including more than 700 000 teaching aids.
MGSU enrolls foreign citizens on the basis of both bilateral intergovernmental agreements (the state budget order) and the applicant’s own cost (individual agreement). They are granted accommodation on University campus. Cost of tuition varies from 1000 to 2000 US dollars per one year depending on speciality, specialisation and the form of tuition. The University enrolls students for the full-time graduate and postgraduate courses, where the duration of training is as follows: Engineer – 5 years, B.Sc. – 4 years, M.Sc. – 2 years, Ph.D. and D.Sc.- 3 years. Also, there are special courses for foreign students: Russian Language –10 months, Preliminary Study Program – 10 months, Advanced Training & Upgrading Programs for the Specialists – from 2 months up to 2 years.

USEFUL INFORMATION
The University Sports Palace disposes with 8 gyms for active sports. There are 31 sport sections, including athletics, wrestling, football, volleyball, hockey, mountaineering, tourism and aerobics.The University " Gold Sands " Sports Camp on the Azov seaside and the Sports Camp in Ramensky District of the Moscow Region disposes with perfect facilities for active leisure. The students of the MGSU have the right to qualified medical help at the University outpatient clinic, Sports Curing and Psychological Aid Service Centers.
